Are You in the Right Career? Do You Need to Consider a Change?
The question of changing career happens at numerous times in your life. Maybe it’s the beginning of a new year. Perhaps you lost your job or you dread going to work every morning. Maybe the money you are being paid is not enough for you. While money should never be a deciding factor about a career change, if you don’t make enough to cover all of your bills then it can definitely be motivating.
Before jumping into changing your career you need to perform some personal introspection. Examine where you are and start asking yourself questions. Don’t settle for where you are in your career because you are comfortable. Being comfortable has never led to greatness and we are all called to greatness.
- What are your future desires?
- Do you feel fulfilled in your current career?
- Do you have dreams that don’t involve what you are currently doing or do you believe that you are simply waiting for the next step?
If you believe your current job/career isn’t getting you where you want to go then it is time to consider changing careers.
Focus on the skills you have that you love to use. Make a list of all of the things you have ever dreamed of doing in a job. Do not accept that little voice in your head that says you can’t. Write every career you believe you could love down on that paper.
Next, write down anything that you are passionate about. Include activities that you enjoy and people that you admire. Make a note as to why you are attracted to these things. Understanding the why is just as important as creating the list itself. These activities are about discovering the true you and understanding the need to adjust to a changing career.
Do not rush into decisions regarding changing your career. This is a life-changing decision that needs to take plenty of self-reflection.
